Ozempic
What is Ozempic?
Ozempic is a prescription Injectable medication that can be used in the management of type 2 diabetes and for assistance with weight loss.
It uses the active ingredient, Semaglutide to mimic the body’s natural hormone Glucagon Like Peptide-1 (GLP-1). This action helps to increase insulin secretion, increase insulin sensitivity, and decrease appetite. Ozempic (Semaglutide)’s ability to regulate blood sugar and reduce the desire for food intake helps in the management of diabetes and weight loss.
Ozempic is taken as a once weekly injection under the skin of the upper arm and is easy to administer.

Ozempic is an injectable prescription medication which uses the active ingredient, Semaglutide to mimic the natural hormone Glucagon Like Peptide-1 (GLP-1). It is primarily used to manage blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes and can also help with weight loss.
Ozempic achieves this function by increasing insulin secretion, increasing insulin sensitivity of body cells, reducing hunger by acting on appetite centers in the brain and slowing stomach emptying, thereby promoting a sense of fullness.
How does it work for weight loss?
Ozempic contains the active ingredient, Semaglutide which is a GLP-1 mimetic. This drug can help signal to the brain that you’re full and reduce appetite and food intake. Semaglutide also reduces gastric emptying (the rate at which food leaves the stomach), this helps create a sense of fullness for an extended period after eating. This allows one to eat smaller portions and still feel full, it also reduces cravings for snacking and thereby prevents overeating.
Ozempic’s primary method for weight loss is reducing appetite and increasing a sense of fullness in the body to help you decrease intake and stick to a reduced calorie diet.
Ozempic Dosage
The dosage of Ozempic depends on whether it’s being used for the management of Type 2 diabetes or weight loss.
Ozempic for type 2 diabetes management is typically started on an injectable low dose of 0.25mg once weekly for the first 4 weeks. This is to help the body tolerate the effects of Ozempic and minimise side effects like nausea. After 4 weeks, the dose is usually gradually increased to a regular maintenance dose of 0.5mg once weekly.
Please speak to your healthcare provider about the appropriate dosing of Ozempic for your type 2 diabetes management.
Wegovy is another drug that contains Semaglutide, however as opposed to Ozempic, Wegovy’s primary function is to assist with weight loss. To that effect a higher concentration of the Semaglutide drug is typically used in Wegovy.
Ozempic can also be prescribed off-label for weight loss but in higher doses. The starting dose of Ozempic starts at 0.25 mg once weekly for 4 weeks but then increases in increments of 0.5mg until a regular maintenance dose of 2.4mg once weekly is reached.
Please consult your healthcare provider about the appropriate dosing of Ozempic off-label for weight loss purposes.
Ozempic vs Wegovy
Ozempic vs Wegovy are both brand names for the same active ingredient, Semaglutide, a GLP-1 mimetic. Both medications differ in their approved uses, dosages and target patient populations.
Ozempic is primarily approved for management of blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetes whereas Wegovy is used more for the management of chronic obesity.
Ozempic is started off on an initial dose of 0.25 mg once weekly for the first 4 weeks and then increased up to a maintenance dose of 0.5mg every week. Wegovy is also started off on an initial dose of 0.25 mg once weekly for the first month but the dose is increased every month by 0.5 mg until the maintenance dose of 2.4mg is needed.
The higher concentration of Semaglutide in Wegovy helps more with the weight loss purposes as opposed to the lower concentrations in Ozempic. The higher concentration of Semaglutide in Wegovy can also mean more serious side effects than for Ozempic.
Both medications are injected into the upper arm once a week under the skin (subcutaneously).
Though Wegovy is approved for the use in weight loss, Ozempic can also be legally prescribed off-label for weight loss purposes.
Is Ozempic legal?
Ozempic is legal and has been approved by the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) for managing blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetes.
While Ozempic is approved for the management of diabetes, it can also be legally prescribed off-label for weight loss by doctors based on their clinical judgement.
